The Friends of the Library of Los Altos is a non-profit, volunteer organization of book enthusiasts that serves the Los Altos Libraries and local communities by processing reusable books and educational materials for resale to the public, and donating the funds raised to support the Libraries and related public programs.

Our Sources of Funds

  • Administrative costs are covered through membership dues of $10/year
  • Library collections, facility improvements, and programs are funded by:
    • Sales of donated books, media, and other materials
    • Cash contributions
    • Proceeds from the Friends Cafe in the Main Library

Community Book Sales

November 6 - November 8, 2026 

Fiction & non-fiction books and media for all ages
$2 or as marked hardbacks, trade and oversize paperbacks
$1 or as marked mass market paperbacks & media
Vintage, Puzzles and Specials (priced as marked)

Saturday, November 7 , 10am - 4pm
Sunday, November 8, 11am -2:00pm. $5 bag sale! (Bags are provided.)
We accept credit cards and cash, no checks.

This is a Books4Schools event.

How to Donate Used Books: Donations of a few books may be placed in the two labeled boxes on the right side of the Main Library lobby.  For larger quantities, please drop off your items, weather permitting, on Wednesdays from 2 - 4pm and on Saturdays from 10am to noon, with the volunteers stationed curbside near the sheds which sit between the History House and the Police Station.  On days when it is raining or when the temperature is 95 degrees or more curbside donations will be cancelled. Instead, we can accept up to 4 boxes per donor in the library lobby during the attended donation hours. Click here for details, or on the Donate tab.  HOLIDAY SCHEDULE: Donations to the volunteer team are not accepted when the Library is closed and on the day before Thanksgiving, Xmas or New Year's.   
The Friends In-Library Ongoing Sales Shelves: Discover wonderful books at bargain prices in the Los Altos Main Library and, a smaller selection, in the Woodlands Branch. New books added every day. Current Main Library hours: Monday - Thursday 10am - 9pm, Friday - Sunday, 10am-7pm.
